According to Aaron Bates, Director of Operations for the Genesee Land Trust, the land trust serves the entire Genesee County, “which is a very large area.”
“This is a really great opportunity, because the northern part of the county is generally underutilized,” said Bates. “There are plenty of parts of the county where we could use that kind of habitat.”
Bates said the land trust has been working with the Red Wings for many years. He said they are primarily interested in the park area.
“In the end, it’s really just about this area,” said Bates. “We have an opportunity to get more habitat for the raccoons.”
The building on the property will be torn down. It currently has a back door that leads to a garage and a front door that leads to the building.
Bates said the land trust is very interested in the raccoon habitat. There are three types of habitats that the land trust could potentially build for the raccoons. They are a standard raccoon habitat, a log pile habitat and an artificial tunnel.
Bates said they would have to figure out the budget for each of the three options, and discuss the plans with the Red Wings.
“Right now, there is no plan yet to move forward with any of them,” said Bates.
He added that the Red Wings said there are too many raccoons at the current site. He said the Red Wings see the raccoons as a nuisance, because they don’t allow the children to play in the park.
He said the plan would be to get rid of the raccoons. He said the land trust would raise the money to hire a trapper to kill the raccoons.
He said the land trust did not yet have an estimate of the cost to build the different kinds of raccoon habitats.1. Field of the Invention
